Top Albums of 2008

The end of the year is always the perfect time for lists; Christmas lists, to-do lists and of course, year-end best of lists. Consequently over the next few days I am going to be posting my picks for the top 12 albums of the year. Why 12 you may ask? Of all the albums I listened to and thought about this year, there seemed to be a natural break at the top 12. All of these albums deserved mention and each has its own merits but also its own flaws. Once the list was narrowed down to twelve, my ranking system was largely subjective. A few factors taken into consideration were the staying power of an album, the emotional impact it had and consistency. Ultimately though, I will make an argument for why I think each one of these records is essential listening but in essence it comes down to the simple fact that I really liked each of them in their own way.

The list also reflects my own limited musical perspective. It leans heavily towards folk and pop/rock with a huge North-American bias. It reflects the genres which I generally enjoy and my own personal biases of taste.

Since writing about music is inherently limited, I have also created a mixtape with two songs from each album. It can be found here. Put on the mix and enjoy the countdown.

Tomorrow is numbers 12-7. Stay tuned.
